Come explore the beautiful benefits of MUD! Historical records suggest mud packs, baths, and wraps have been used therapeutically for centuries. Each of these minerals (mud and clay) has its own special composition and properties. In general, they hold heat and are useful as a thermal application for chronic conditions. Its high mineral content (chloride, salts of magnesium, sodium, potassium, calcium, and bromine) has a drawing effect that is detoxifying and healing. Mud helps relieve muscle and joint pain, reduces inflammation, relaxes muscles, stimulates circulation and lymph flow, and supports detoxification. We will explore three treatments together, using two types of mud: Sedona Clay and Hungarian Moor Mud.

The Blissful Back Treatment is a great add on to your sports or deep tissue massage. This multistep treatment includes a cleanse, exfoliation, mud masque, and massage. The rich red clay from Sedona will create a healing body wrap experience that purifies the skin and relaxes the spirit….truly detoxifying.

And finally, the Sports Fango will include a warm mud spot treatment applied to areas of joint and muscle pain; reviewing specificities of acute and chronic conditions.

April 20, 2012:  Fijian To Go

Friday: 5:00PM-9:00PM

CE Hours:  4

Cost:  Early Registration $70; $85 after March 23.

Learn and experience a deep tissue massage technique that has been evolving for generations on the Islands of Fiji.   Lolita Knight learned this barefoot technique while living in the remote villages there and in 1997 she further developed it and brought her teachings to the United States.  Fijian To Go is a mobile adaptation of Fijian Massage requiring minimal equipment and supplies.  It focuses on the back, shoulders, gluteals and legs and is great for sporting events, family settings, corporate massage as well as your massage office.  Therapists use 9 different parts of their feet to effectively massage clients who are lying on the floor.  It does not include walking on the client’s back.  All strokes can be performed while standing, sitting on a chair or sofa, or reclining on the floor.  The weight of your leg gauges the pressure.  No hands, arms or shoulders are ever used, making it truly a hands-saving technique that can add to your career longevity.  In addition, clients recover faster from muscle injuries and most clients prefer the heel of the foot pressure over that of the elbow.

This course includes:

  •  The history of Fijian Massage
  •  Barefoot massage techniques performed while sitting in a chair, standing or
  •    reclining on the floor
  •  Practicing balance techniques for Fijian Massage performed while standing
  •  Developing hand-saving skills for deep therapeutic strokes
  •  Marketing strategies for introducing Fijian Massage to clients
  •  The importance of foot care

What to Bring: Please wear cotton clothing, but no jeans.  T- shirts and light weight sweat shirts are best and to have a collar if possible.  No straps or zippers.

Now a certified instructor of NCBTMB approved continuing education courses, Debbie plans to continue Lolita’s legacy by bringing unique and beneficial classes to the massage community as Lolita prepares for retirement. April 21, 2012:  Massage Tools to Save Hands

Saturday:  6:00PM - 9:00PM

CE Hours:  3

Cost:  Early Registration $55.00; $70 after March 23.

Massage therapy is a physically demanding profession. The careers of many massage therapists are interrupted or terminated because of self-injury, particularly to their wrists and hands. Even with proper body mechanics, therapists can still suffer hand and shoulder injuries. When the open palm method and massage tools are used along with proper body mechanics, these types of injuries can be avoided. This hands-on course is designed to help massage therapists achieve deeper penetrating pressure on their clients without exerting more force with their hands.
After a variety of tools are introduced and proper handling is demonstrated, students then experiment with them, giving and receiving massage. Some tools are to be used only over clothing ("back rollers," “Magic Massager”, "jacknobber," "spiky balls”, "Aqua Cel Pad").  Some are more versatile and can be used with or without oil as well as for self-massage ("Thumbby," "octopus," "turtle", “antler”, “snail”, “Serpentine Stone”). You are encouraged to bring your own tools to learn how to properly handle and "not grip" them. The goal is for you to have less muscular discomfort after using these tools and to find a tool or two to add to your massage offerings to further benefit your clients and enhance your business. This is a fun class that offers an opportunity to sample tools before purchasing.  A list of vendors and the cost of the tools are included.

April 22, 2012:  Indian Head Massage for Chair & Table

Sunday:  9:00AM-6:00PM

CE Hours:  8

Cost:  Early Registration $165; $185 after March 23.

Based on the ancient Indian healing system of Ayurveda, this technique has been practiced for over a thousand years.  The massage is calming yet revitalizing, and focuses on the parts
of the body most prone to tension and stress: the upper back, neck, shoulders, face and scalp.  Pressure points are stimulated during the massage.  Indian Head Massage can help eyestrain and headaches, improve concentration, boost hair health, relieve shoulder tension, increase neck mobility, calm the mind and ease emotional stress.

This technique is delivered with the client fully clothed using a chair or as part of a complete bodywork session using a table.  For the table segment of the class students remove upper garments and oil is applied to the arms, shoulders, neck and upper back.  A Velcro spa wrap may be worn.  Oil is optional for the scalp massage.  The instructor includes organic Ayurvedic herbal scalp oils from Solavedi.  This blissful technique offers gentle relief from physical ailments in addition to general relaxation.  Great to add to onsite chair massage, for geriatric clients confined to a wheelchair or as a creative ending to a table massage. Please have clean hair and use no hair products on the day of the class.

What to bring:  2 sheets.   If you have long hair, please bring a hair accessory to pull it back.

Instructor:  Debbie DeNardo, BS, LMT, NCTMB (see bio above)
